Obesity Challenge

Obesity is a disorder in which excess body fat gets accumulated to such extent that it may have negative effects on health. It occurs over time when people eat more calories than they utilize. The reasons for obesity can be medical problems, inactivity, genetics, family lifestyle, unhealthy diet, medications, age, and pregnancy. Being obese increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, and some type of cancers.

Epidemiology

Approximately 1

% children, are overweight or obese in the OECD area

Social Impact

Over 600

adults worldwide were obese in 2016 (BMI>30)

Costs

Approximately 1

billion € of global obesity market is expected by 2024 (with a CAGR of 21%)

Obesity

Obesity develops when energy intake exceeds energy expenditure.

In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults aged 18 years and older were overweight. Of these over 650 million adults were obese.

Obesity treatment market is segmented based on lifestyle changes, surgical & implant devices, and medication therapy

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is a specialized fat tissue that has high metabolic activity and is able to dissipate (waste) energy, fatty acids and glucose, to produce heat

Adult humans have functional BAT, a new target for antiobesity and antidiabetes therapies focusing on increasing energy expenditure

Our solution to treat Obesity

The goal of Defymed is to use MailPan® technology as a platform for cell encapsulation. In the case of obesity, the aim is to macro-encapsulate Brown Adipose Tissue (BAT) in immuno-protective membranes.

The combine solution implies and offers:

  • No need for immunosuppressive drugs/treatments thanks to a semi-permeable membrane allowing the passage of small molecules (such as oxygen or nutrients) while preventing the passage of molecule/cells of the immune system.
  • Physiological site of implantation to optimize efficacy and time of action of BAT.
  • Cell therapy for long term autonomous and near-physiological treatment of the disease.
